Matthew the Hyper Hypo

About a decade or more ago, Saturday Night Live star Mike Myers had a skit about a hyperactive/hyperglycemic kid named Phillip. Phillip wore a helmet and was often tethered to something for his own protection. (His mother was a little overprotective.) If you gave Phillip sugar, he'd go crazy and do stuff like tear monkey bars from its foundation and drag them down the street.

That's kind of like Matthew when he's tired and he doesn't want to go to bed. The kid's activity level is inversely proportionate to his level of tiredness. (Did I say that right? Anyway: The more tired, the more active.) He has superhuman energy and has actually ripped a DVD into two pieces. I'm serious.

Today at church we stayed after for a luncheon, which is always dangerous with Matthew because he naps right after lunch. As we were finishing our meal, Matthew became louder, more insistent, and more active, so I let him down, hoping he'd run some of the energy off. Instead, he got into things that weren't his, attempted to steal someone's walker, shut himself into a dark closet, and was generally a pest.

I'm really tempted to purchase the tethering device and try it out.
