Kid Free Night

Chris's mom picked up Matthew yesterday to spend the weekend with her. With Brandon still in Texas this meant a very rare kid-free night for the two of us. I had a firm function after work on Friday to welcome a new Associate but afterwards I came home and Chris and I spent a quiet, restful evening at home. We debated going out, but after working all day we were both too tired.

This morning, I woke up before 7 am - probably out of habit, you know, expecting to be awakened to cook breakfast or some type of domestic labor like that. And then I realized - I don't have to feed anyone. No one is going to come in demanding that cartoons be turned on the television. I can sleep another 8 hours if I wanted to. So I went back to sleep and actually slept until a time I'm too ashamed to publish. But, boy, was it nice!

I went to a local salon and had probably the best hair cut I've ever had. I'm so happy with it. This is quite an accomplishment since my hair and I have had a very strained relationship since I was 6 years old. My hair is naturally wavy, course and thick and I do not possess the talent to deal with it. However, with this hair cut, I can wear it wavy or straighten it out. The stylist thinned it out so much that my head actually feels lighter. It's raining right now and my hair has not exploded into a huge ball of frizz. I am so excited - maybe this is what my hair and I needed to repair our relationship. Now let's see if I can repeat the stylist's results at home . . .

After my salon appointment, Chris and I went to a local creperie and had, what else? Crepes. We split a Mont Blanc - mozzarella cheese, chicken, mushrooms, red onions and then a "freedom" crepe - strawberries, blueberries and creme fraiche sprinkled with powdered sugar. Very yummy.

We then went to the airport and picked Brandon up - he had a great time (albeit HOT) in Texas with his grandparents. (It was HOT here, too . . .) The rest of the day we spent lounging around the house.

Matthew comes home tomorrow. I just got off the phone with him. I was afraid we were gong to have to make a late night trip to Illinois to pick him up, but he just wanted to say 'hi.' Sounds like he's having a great time, too. This is his first trip overnight without us or Brandon, and I was a little hesitant at first to let him go. I think it was more that I was going to miss him than being afraid of him being homesick.

So that's the weekend so far. Tomorrow we'll go school supply shopping and Monday night meet Brandon's teacher. He starts 5th grade on Wednesday. They grow up so fast!
