I've been trying to encourage Matthew to read and spell. I know it's early, but he's going to need all the help he can get. He can already recognize his name, which is encouraging, and he loves to 'write' and draw on paper. So we had this conversation in the car today:
"Matt, see the stop sign? S-t-o-p spells stop. S-t-o-p. How do you spell stop?
"D-e-i!"
"No, that's 'dei' as in Opus Dei, which is a little too difficult to explain right now. Try s-t-o-p."
"E-o-n!"
"OK, that's 'eon,' which is pretty good, but 'stop' is s-t-o-p. You know, like on the stop sign. S-t-o-p begins with 's.' What does 'stop' begin with?"
"Five!"
"Alright. Maybe you didn't hear me. Stop is s-t-o-p."
"S-t-o-p!"
"Very good! How do you spell stop?"
"E-i-e-i-o!"
