As you can tell, we live in St. Louis now, but from 1993 to 2005, we lived in Oklahoma. Let me start by saying that you will never meet nicer people anywhere else. Oklahomans are some of the nicest people I've ever met, and I've been quite a few places.
However, one of the reasons we left Oklahoma was the fanatical focus on football and the lack of interest in higher education by the general public. Chris was a college professor at a private university and he had wonderful students who did care about their educations, but most of them left the state for better jobs or grad school. It seemed that for the majority of Oklahomans, graduating from high school was end of the educational line.
In the Oklahoma media, football dominates. They will interrupt prime time television with breaking news updates for any rumor the football coach might be leaving, for game updates or to let you know which players have been arrested, why they were arrested and what their status is for Saturday's game.
When I saw that someone named E. Z. Million was running for lieutenant governor, I thought it was a joke, but the guy has an actual website. He's spending money on campaigning (I guess) and his platform: OU football must be played in Norman so he's going to force OU to stop playing the OU-Texas game in Dallas. That's it. Football.
Now, I've accused some of my Oklahoma friends of being football obsessed, which they wholeheartedly admit, but this is just crazy. I bet the guy actually garners a few votes, especially if he can use OU's logo on his campaign material.

I knew some people from Lincoln, Nebraska. Sounds about the same - they were nuts about the Huskers. I guess there's just not much else to do.
