Happy or Scary?

At Christmas, Matthew pointed to one of Chris’s uncles and said, “Uncle Roger’s really happy.” We all thought that was a cute toddler observation. However, after repeatedly asking, “Is Mama really happy? Is Matthew really happy?” we couldn’t get Matthew to identify anyone else as “really happy.”

Monday, in the science museum, we saw an animated T-Rex that scared Matthew. He pointed to the dinosaur and said, “Dinosaur really happy. Go that way,” and fervently pointed away from the exhibit. So apparently Matthew was scared of Uncle Roger and did not think he was “really happy.”

(Uncle Roger is in no way a really scary person. In fact, he’s quite pleasant to be around. I have no idea why Matthew thinks he’s scary. Then again, we may totally be misinterpreting the tentative grasp of language in our two-year old.)
